Drago Canarias has filed an administrative litigation appeal against the agreement proclaiming the coalition Unidad del Pueblo Canario (UPC), considering that it induces confusion and usurps the acronyms "in force and historic for the sovereignist policy" in the archipelago.
In a statement released this Friday, Drago Canarias reported that the appeal was filed this Thursday before the courts of the two provinces.
Likewise, Drago Canarias has demanded its electoral rights from the Central Electoral Board and the proportional allocation of free propaganda spaces and media coverage in public regional and state media.
In its electoral litigation appeal, Drago Canarias maintains that the use of the acronym UPC by the coalition formed by Nueva Canarias, Izquierda Unida, Podemos Canarias, and Sumar "flagrantly violates" article 46.4 of the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime by deliberately evoking two external political realities.
The electoral coalition Unión del Pueblo Canario (UPC) is a reference of the nationalist left that obtained representation in the Cortes Generales and in the Mayor's Office of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1979, and it is also a political party registered in the Registry of Parties based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife), according to Drago Canarias.
The party led by Alberto Rodríguez points out that the legal action does not seek the exclusion of candidates from the list, but rather the "immediate activation" of the rectification procedure provided for in article 47.2 of the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime (LORG) so that the coalition modifies its name or removes the acronym UPC from the voting instrument, thus guaranteeing citizens' right to cast a free and informed vote without distortions.
In its other appeal against Agreement 322/2026 of the Central Electoral Board, which attributes the electoral rights of the past elections of July 23, 2023, it understands that the Drago Canarias formation has been excluded.
The note points out that the formation obtained 107,999 votes in 2023 in the archipelago, 10.55% of the valid votes cast in the territory, running in the Sumar coalition and heading the candidacy for the Congress of Deputies for Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Likewise, the eighth clause of the constitutive pact formally registered before the Central Electoral Board explicitly granted it 20% territorial representation.
Therefore, it has rejected that the rights accumulated in 2023 be unduly absorbed by a new confluence, UPC, made up of parties such as Nueva Canarias and four parties from Madrid, when Nueva Canarias competed independently in those elections.
Therefore, it requires the allocation of the 30-minute segment of free propaganda broadcast that legally corresponds to it based on the 2023 results on Radio Televisión Canaria and Radio Televisión Española, formal integration into the Radio and Television Commission responsible for supervising the electoral period, and inclusion in coverage plans, interviews, and debates.
A right that it understands is reinforced by the recognition of the trajectory of its leader, Alberto Rodríguez.
Drago Canarias considers that "it cannot be allowed for the decision of the electorate at the polls to be distorted by the appropriation of historical and registered acronyms, nor for the only Canarian force that indisputably participated in the result of an electoral coalition in the 2023 General Elections to be made invisible in the public media."
Therefore, it emphasizes that they have resorted to the justice system and electoral bodies to guarantee the legitimate rights of the trajectory of Canarian sovereignty and to demand "fair play" and defend the rights of the more than 100,000 votes that supported the candidacies of which it was part as a political organization in the 2023 General Elections.
