The Department of Social Welfare, Equality and Immigration of the Arrecife City Council, headed by Maite Corujo, keeps the registration period for the municipal service of Spanish classes for the non-Spanish-speaking population residing in the municipality open all year round.
This initiative, with more than fifteen years of history, aims to provide neighbors who do not speak Spanish with the necessary linguistic tools to function in their daily lives, access public resources, and actively participate in the community.
“There is no greater barrier to integration than not being able to communicate. Learning the language allows people to function with more autonomy, know their rights, access public services, and establish relationships with their environment. Therefore, I encourage all those who need it to approach the municipal Social Services and find out about this resource,” says Maite Corujo.
The councilor emphasizes that the social reality of Arrecife makes it especially necessary to promote initiatives of this nature. Nearly 40% of the municipality's population comes from other countries, and people of more than a hundred different nationalities live together in the city.
This diversity makes it necessary to incorporate an intercultural perspective into municipal policies, with the aim of preventing and combating discrimination, promoting equal opportunities, and fostering citizen coexistence.
In this context, Spanish classes have been consolidated as a public support resource for people who have established their residence in Arrecife, offering a space for learning, meeting, and social inclusion.
The service is not limited to the formal learning of the language at different levels, but also includes a cross-cutting program aimed at reinforcing communication skills and facilitating the social adaptation of the participants.
Those interested in participating in the Spanish classes can register their interest throughout the year at the municipal Social Services facilities, located at calle Doctor Juan Negrín, s/n, behind the Red Cross building.
