The plenary session of the Teguise City Council approved this Thursday the motion presented by the Socialist Party (PSOE) to promote urgent measures to streamline the processing of licenses and reduce the high volume of files accumulated in the technical department of the consistory.

The initiative was approved in a context of new division within the governing group. Coalición Canaria voted against the proposal, while the PP abstained, a stance that facilitated its approval.

The municipal spokesperson for the PSOE, Marcos Bergaz, valued the outcome of the plenary session and stressed that "beyond political differences, the important thing is to take a step to try to unblock a problem that has been affecting residents, professionals, and companies in the municipality for years."

As La Voz has been reporting, the delay in granting licenses and authorizations has become one of the main problems in the municipality, as well as a new focus of internal tension within the local government made up of CC, PP, and the former councilor of Vox. Rita Hernández, councilor for Tourism and Beaches, Urban Planning, and Technical Office of the Teguise City Council, stated a few weeks ago on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that nearly 5,000 files had been accumulated in the Technical Office.

The socialists also point out that the government itself acknowledges in reports the existence of thousands of pending files. According to municipal data, the accumulated volume exceeds 4,787 files, although in public statements it has been stated as "over 5,000," including licenses, prior communications, and urban planning enforcement files.

The approved motion includes a set of measures aimed at improving the management capacity of the Technical Office and reducing waiting times.

These include strengthening technical and administrative staff, creating working groups with professional associations, updating ordinances and urban planning regulations, and developing a practical guide to facilitate the correct submission of applications.

The proposal also includes the implementation of fast-track processing procedures for priority files, especially those related to residential housing, as well as the creation of a monitoring commission with representation from all political groups.

During the debate, Marcos Bergaz defended the PSOE's “firm and constructive” stance throughout the entire term and criticized the internal situation of the local government, which, as he stated, “penalizes the interests of the municipality and its residents”.

“Firmness to denounce the accumulation of files and the delays suffered by citizens and businesses, but also usefulness with the presentation of this battery of measures. We will be vigilant to ensure they are carried out,” concluded the socialist spokesperson.
