The San Bartolomé City Council applauds that, "finally", work is beginning to dismantle the Montaña Mina wind farm.
This great infrastructure became obsolete in 2017 and since then, the local Corporation and the neighborhood community have insisted on uninstalling the different mills and other elements that, with the passage of time, was a serious danger to security in the area.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, emphasizes that “it is good news that, after several years of complaints and requirements from the City Council to the Government of the Canary Islands, action is finally being taken in Montaña Mina this Thursday after the announcement made a week ago by the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the regional executive. San Bartolomé wants to take care of its environment and this action is the result of a general clamor, which after a first step, must take a further step such as the environmental restoration of the affected area.”
In this sense, Pérez recalls that "the Corporation has been insisting for years on the removal of this wind farm due to its serious danger, requesting through different requirements a more than justified action". “In November 2023, after repeated requests to the General Directorate of Industry of the Government of the Canary Islands, the administrative procedure began to pick up speed, which today translates into the removal of this complex infrastructure.”
The first actions focus on dismantling four generators of the five that originally made up the park, as well as on the demolition of the control booth and the removal of medium voltage pipes.
“It is vital to dismantle the wind turbines as soon as possible since they are a clear example of danger and public risk, since we have verified the real risk of maintaining this type of mill that did not receive adequate maintenance,” Pérez emphasizes. “Months ago the fall of one of them caused the breakage of the electrical network wiring and hundreds of families were left without electricity.”
In this way, "the municipality of San Bartolomé continues the trail of actions that converge in the protection of the environment and with which it aspires to be a municipality that, together with the practice of its new aesthetic ordinance, values the beauty and uniqueness of Lanzarote", they conclude from the Consistory.
