Detours in Cuatros Esquinas due to anti-flood works

The Arrecife City Council informs of diversions and restrictions to traffic in the Cuatros Esquinas area, starting this Monday, July 27, with the commencement of drainage works in this vital area of the city, where León y Castillo, Cienfuegos, Franco, Pérez Galdós, and Jacinto Borges streets converge.

The mayor, Yonathan de León, directly responsible for the Public Works Department, has detailed that the works at this intersection, complementary to the drainage works on Jacinto Borges street (which borders an area of the Ribera del Charco), are being carried out during these summer weeks because they coincide with less traffic on the streets, and to avoid the upcoming Pino tides (September), when the tide covers this point in Arrecife as it is at sea level.

Yonathan de León emphasizes to residents, merchants, and drivers that these works may cause traffic congestion in this area as it is the intersection of several vital streets in the center of Arrecife. The City Council requests the understanding of citizens, merchants, and residents, because part of these new municipal works aims to install drains (which this enclave lacks) and to construct underground chambers for the new rainwater pumping stations. 

Until the construction of the Charco de San Ginés promenade, in the 1980s of the last century, and an artistic work by César Manrique, the tide waters reached Cuatro Esquinas. The city center, which was born alongside the tide, is at sea level, and all heavy rainwater flows into this area when it is carried from the surrounding, elevated streets, which gave the El Lomo neighborhood its name.

Currently, the Arrecife City Council, through the Public Works Department, has underway works to install a stormwater drainage network in several areas of the city, which are currently lacking. These new networks are being built in the vicinity of Charco de San Ginés (Jacinto Borges street) and Vía Medular, between Puerto de Naos and León y Castillo street. The works that will start this coming Monday the 27th in the Cuatro Esquinas area are complementary to those executed in recent months on Jacinto Borges street. These actions will be added to the upcoming installation of drains in more than 20 streets in the Argana and Maneje neighborhoods, by the Insular Water Council. In total, stormwater works are being carried out in the city of Arrecife with an investment of approximately 5 million euros. 

The Councilor for Mobility and Transport, Mario González Altube, informs that the diversions and restrictions in the Cuatro Esquinas area have been planned for these dates after the resurfacing of several streets in El Lomo was completed, works that the City Council has finished this week, and which allow for these new traffic diversions.

During this weekend, informative barriers will be installed in these areas, and from Monday the 27th, Cienfuegos, Francos, León y Castillo, Pérez Galdós, Gran Canaria, and Jacinto Borges streets will have restrictions and diversions.

The Department of Mobility and Transport has established areas for taxi stands, and loading and unloading points for goods.
