The General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Maritime Space of Canary Islands has given the green light to the Department of Urban Planning of the Arrecife City Council for its comprehensive reform proposal for the Theme Park. This was announced by the capital's council this Thursday.
The Department of Urban Planning, led by Maciot Cabrera (CC), has defined this decision as "a decisive step forward in the complex administrative process that will make one of the most important urban regeneration actions" in the capital of Lanzarote a reality.
Said resolution issued by Coasts to the request of Urban Planning accepts the conditions for granting the necessary concession to execute the project on the maritime-terrestrial public domain, thus culminating a procedure initiated by the City Council at the end of 2023. A space reclaimed from the sea
Meanwhile, part of the project includes several constructions (a stage, a dance floor, and a viewpoint) in the Punta del Camello area, a "space reclaimed from the sea" and located within the artificial coastline that took land from the sea in the mid-fifties of the last century. A few months ago, during a wave alert, part of the walls and paving stones of this space were destroyed.
With climate forecasts for rising sea levels, the project states that the coastline between La Bufona and Punta del Camello "will not undergo major changes or will be of low influence." Meanwhile, they do add that within less than 25 years, El Reducto beach will lose part of its space due to rising sea levels, and these forecasts affect part of the project, the avenue that is between the current skate park and El Reducto beach.
"It surpasses all phases required by the regulations"
Since the application was submitted on December 12, 2023, the file has passed all phases required by the regulations, including the correction of technical documentation, two public information periods, the incorporation of favorable sectoral reports, the resolution of objections filed, and the accreditation that the project complies with current legislation on Coastal matters.
The General Directorate further concludes that the action is "viable, adapts to the terrain, and is fully compatible with the regulations" governing the maritime-terrestrial public domain.
An expected resolution since the end of 2023
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Maciot Cabrera, has highlighted the importance of this administrative progress by stating that “we had been waiting for this resolution since the end of 2023 because we knew it was a key piece to continue advancing a transformative project for Arrecife. There have been many months of technical, legal, and administrative work from the Department of Urban Planning to meet all the requirements of the Coastal Authority until achieving this result”.
Cabrera further emphasizes that “this favorable report demonstrates that the project is perfectly well-founded and meets all the requirements demanded by the regulations. It is magnificent news for the city because it definitively brings us closer to the execution of an infrastructure that will completely change one of the most emblematic spaces on the Arrecife coastline”.
The councilor recalls that the reform will allow the recovery of a park built in 1997 that presents significant conservation problems and its adaptation to the current needs of the citizens, turning it into a large public space for leisure, sports, coexistence, and enjoyment of the coastline.
Comprehensive renovation of 37,500 square meters
The action includes the comprehensive renovation of the 37,550 square meters occupied by the Theme Park through a design that combines new green areas with sports, children's, and citizen meeting spaces.
The project incorporates two large squares, a viewpoint with a stage for outdoor activities, inclusive children's areas inspired by the marine environment, picnic areas, a dog park, water fountains with a solarium area, a cactus garden, multi-sport courts, a skatepark, a calisthenics area, a pump track circuit, a bouldering climbing wall, spaces for physical well-being, as well as a new kiosk with restrooms and storage completely integrated into the park's topography.
The proposal also aims to reinforce the existing green infrastructure, increase the vegetation, and improve the "thermal comfort" of the space through criteria of sustainability, universal accessibility, and adaptation to climate change, while simultaneously enhancing the park's connection with the coastline and El Reducto beach.
The base tender budget for this action amounts to 8,326,497.54 euros, and the estimated execution period is eighteen months.
“Every step we take brings us closer to a long-awaited project by the residents of Arrecife. The rehabilitation of the Theme Park will mean the recovery of a privileged enclave in our city, turning it into a modern, accessible, sustainable space designed for the enjoyment of all generations,” concludes Maciot Cabrera.
