The Teguise City Council took a fundamental step this Tuesday to provide Costa Teguise with a beach area adapted to the needs of dog and pet owners. In the Municipal Plenary held this Tuesday, the modification of the Regulatory Ordinance for the Use and Enjoyment of the Beaches of the municipal district of Teguise, which dates from 2012, and which until now prohibited the access of dogs to them, has been approved.
This initiative, promoted by the collaboration of the Departments of Tourism, Beaches and Animal Welfare, will allow the creation of a specific area in Playa Bastián where dogs can transit, stay and bathe with their owners, always under conditions that guarantee coexistence and respect for the environment.
The Councilor for Tourism and Beaches, Rita Hernández, has expressed her enthusiasm: "We are very happy to announce this important development for our neighbors and visitors. Knowing that we can enjoy a day at the beach with our dogs, in a space designed for it, was a social demand that we have listened to and addressed. This makes us a more inclusive and modern municipality."
The councilor also considers the advantages of having a friendly space for dog owners: "The creation of this dog beach not only improves the quality of life of our residents, but also positions us as a more attractive and 'pet-friendly' tourist destination. We know that more and more families are traveling with their pets, and offering them a space to enjoy the sea without worries is an indisputable added value for Teguise."
For his part, the Councilor for Animal Welfare, Ginés González, has underlined the commitment to animal welfare and responsibility: "With this small step, we are moving towards promoting respectful and responsible coexistence. It will have signage and everything necessary to facilitate the collection of excrement and permanent maintenance. In addition, I want to remind you of the importance of always keeping dogs controlled and, in the case of some breeds, always with a muzzle to guarantee the safety of everyone. This is an initiative that seeks the well-being of our animals and a better experience for those who share this unique environment.”
The modification of the ordinance is the first step in this project. In April 2025, the proposal was published on the City Council's Transparency Portal so that citizens could make their contributions, thus guaranteeing a participatory process. The following steps will include drafting the technical project and executing the beach adaptation works, for which the City Council has already allocated the necessary financial endowment.
With this action, "Teguise is advancing in its commitment to offer inclusive public spaces adapted to the diverse needs of its community, promoting coexistence and enjoyment of its exceptional natural environment." The modification will enter into force one month after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, scheduled for this week.
