Prison officials have gathered this Friday at the Tahíche Penitentiary Center in protest of the aggression suffered by an official at the Cuenca prison.
The ACAIP-UGT and CSIF unions explain that the aggression occurred during the shift change of officials, when the prisoner "barricaded himself in the bathroom", so the head of services had to go accompanied by three officials. During the intervention, they detail, the inmate "jumped from the toilet over the officials with a piece of glass in his hand to attack the head of services", cutting him in the neck, a few millimeters from the jugular vein, "causing a very bloody wound".
Prison workers assure that they are "tired of the administration's neglect to solve the serious problem that accumulates in Spanish prisons". They maintain that they are "excessively lax with violent inmates, that adequate measures are not taken, and that the actions of workers are systematically restricted." In addition, they denounce "the lack of medical personnel to care for inmates with psychiatric problems and who can prescribe the appropriate medication", so they assure that the risk situation increases "exponentially".
"We are convinced that, on this occasion, there will be no leakage of images from security cameras or a call from the General Secretariat to the door of the centers," the unions say. They again request "the consideration of authority for prison workers." "There are no excuses to continue delaying this measure," the unions conclude.
"It is curious that when the aggression is suffered by a commander, as happened with the deputy director of Villena, it is the General Secretariat itself that convenes the rallies and encourages participation, however, it may put obstacles when it is another worker of the center who almost loses his life," denounce the prison unions, who request "respect from the managers".
