Chaxiraxi Niz resigns as mayor of Haría to comply with the agreement with the PMH

The new mayor will be the number two of the Platform, Evelia García. An extraordinary and urgent Plenary session is scheduled for this Friday so that the Corporation can take note of the resignation.

The mayor of Haría, Chaxiraxi Niz, has presented this Thursday her resignation to the Mayor's Office, thus fulfilling the agreement between the Canarian Coalition and the Platform of the Municipality of Haría (PMH). The baton will be taken in the coming days by the number two of the PMH, Evelia García, as Víctor Robayna has told La Voz.

An extraordinary and urgent Plenary session is scheduled for this Friday so that the Corporation can take note of the resignation of Chaxiraxi Niz. From there, there will be a period of ten days to hold another plenary session in which the new mayor of the municipality is appointed.

The agreement between the Canarian Coalition and the Platform of the Municipality of Haría was presented in November 2022, after CC broke the agreement it had until then with the PSOE. The agreement between both formations agreed that the Mayor's Office would fall on CC until June 2022, and from there it would pass into the hands of the PMH until the 2023 elections.

However, it should be remembered that at that time the PMH did not clarify who would be the person who would take the baton, and that it would be agreed "by consensus". That same term was used by the outgoing mayor, Chaxiraxi Niz, on Radio Lanzarote last May, when she rejoined her duties after maternity leave.

Now everything seems to indicate that it will be the number 2 of the PMH, Evelia García, until now councilor of the areas of Education, Culture, Health, Youth, Tourism, Crafts, Animal Welfare and Transparency, who will be the new mayor of Haría. She will be the fifth person to occupy the position in this legislature, after Marci Acuña, Alfredo Villalba, Víctor Robayna -provisionally and as acting mayor- and Chaxiraxi Niz.
