Coalición Canaria (CC) Yaiza has submitted a motion to the Yaiza City Council plenary session urging the mayor to "act immediately to improve" the safety of several pedestrian crossings in the municipality. "There are crossings where parked vehicles or public service elements limit or impede the visibility of pedestrians and drivers, others with poor signage and road markings with hardly any paint, and also a significant number with insufficient lighting," CC Yaiza points out in its motion.

In this regard, the nationalist municipal spokesperson, Emilio Machín, considers it necessary that "given the numerous deficiencies" these crosswalks present, "putting at risk the physical integrity of both pedestrians and drivers, it is necessary for the municipal government to take action."

Specifically, the nationalist formation requests that the city council "act immediately on the pedestrian crossing that is near the Yaiza soccer field, located on Vista street," adding "a light point on the side of the road and using reflective paints or luminous devices on the ground to help drivers identify it."

It also requests to act "immediately" on the improvement of signage for the one located on La Lapa street in Playa Blanca, as well as placing "luminous devices and reflective paint" on the two located between the El Campo restaurant and El Volcán street in Yaiza.

Study and technical report

In a broad sense, CC Yaiza requests in its motion that the municipal technical services carry out a "preliminary study and subsequent report that considers the improvement of the visibility of all pedestrian crossings," avoiding the presence of "obstacles that impede visibility for vehicles and with sufficient anticipation to be able to identify pedestrians accessing the crosswalks."

It also calls for improving the technical quality of horizontal signage through the application of high-reflectance paints that avoid the need to install additional luminous and vertical elements in existing crossings, which would only be installed where deemed essential.

Lowering the sidewalks where pedestrian crossings are located to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility; installing sound devices regulated by traffic lights to improve the safety of the visually impaired; and implementing a visibility margin for both pedestrians and drivers in those located between parking spaces, are other issues subject to study according to CC Yaiza.

Once this study is carried out, the City Council "will implement these actions progressively, taking the first measures in those crossings that are located near schools, parks, health and leisure centers, main roads, dangerous intersections, as well as in those where there has been an accident caused by lack of visibility, carrying out a defined plan of priorities to correct deficiencies," adds the nationalist formation in the motion.
