The Lanzarote parliamentarian of the Canarian Nationalist Group (CC-PNC-AHI) Jesús Machín Tavío has asked in the Canarian Chamber about the status of the aid line for the camel sector, "approved in February and of which nothing is yet known", and has demanded its immediate application.

The nationalist deputy recalled that it was his Group who at the beginning of this year 2021 proposed to the Government of the Canary Islands that within the aid for the post-Covid-19 economic situation, a line should be opened to cover the costs of care and maintenance of camels while the limitations of tourist activity persisted.

“We requested a Non-Law Proposal (PNL) in which the establishment, within the framework of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, of annual subsidies for the camel sector destined to the maintenance of the native Canarian breed was also requested, as well as deepening and investigating the possible uses not known or practiced in the Canary Islands to boost the breeding and maintenance of camels”, he explained.

Likewise, he insisted that “we cannot ignore such a punished sector, which has never received aid and which today is really drowning, without knowing if what was approved is going to reach them, if something has advanced in our proposal or not”.

Jesús Machín also stated that the Yaiza City Council shares this same concern, with whose mayor and first deputy mayor he had the opportunity this week to visit and meet with the camel herders. "We have assumed and transferred the demands of the mayor of Yaiza and his government group, very concerned about the distressing situation of a sector that is going through one of the most delicate times in its history”, he warned.
