Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular in Lanzarote have presented a motion to name geriatrician Elisa Corujo as Favorite Daughter of the island. This decision comes after the Canary Islands Health Service, controlled by CC, dismissed her as president of the Commission for Guarantee and Evaluation of Aid for Dying in the Canary Islands just two weeks ago, citing alleged "incapacity to exercise her functions."
This body is responsible for overseeing the application of the right to euthanasia in the archipelago. Furthermore, the decision was appealed by Elisa Corujo herself, who alleged irregularities in the resolution and requested its annulment.
The motion by the parties forming the island's Governing Group was made public after the PSOE in Lanzarote announced another urgent motion this past Monday requesting Elisa Corujo's reinstatement to her position, arguing that Health did not provide specific reasons for the dismissal and that the Commission's independence should be protected.
Both Elisa Corujo herself and the PSOE of Lanzarote believe that the geriatrician was removed from the Presidency of the Commission due to her transparent exercise of publishing the first report on the evolution of the application of the Euthanasia Law in the islands. "It was not well received by the Directorate of the Health Service, hence my dismissal," Corujo stated in declarations to La Voz.
In a four-page motion, Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular promote "recognizing and valuing" the career of the Lanzarote healthcare professional who has contributed to the development of Geriatrics in Lanzarote for four decades. However, they have not commented on the controversy surrounding her dismissal from the Guarantee Commission.
