Around fifty people attended a meeting convened by Coalición Canaria in San Bartolomé last Thursday in order to express their rejection of the construction of a "macro-center" for the reception of migrants in Güíme. This rejection was also shared by the residents who attended, most of whom, according to the nationalists, were residents of the town.

“The main conclusion of the meeting is the firm will of both CC and the citizens themselves to do everything possible to ensure that the City Council, the Cabildo, and the Canarian Government form a common front that opposes the construction of the macro-center; and for the Spanish Government to comply with the Canarian Pact for Migration, which obliges it to have the approval of the Canary Islands to carry out any action in the Archipelago on this matter”, explained the nationalist municipal spokesperson in San Bartolomé, David Rocío.

In this sense, Rocío expressed his confidence “that all the political parties present in the San Bartolomé City Council agree with these same approaches”; and he announced that “either via a motion or requesting the convocation of an extraordinary plenary session, we are going to propose that these parties officially pronounce themselves against the macro-center and that the initiatives that are necessary to avoid its construction” are adopted in a consensual manner.

“It is not about being unsupportive, on the contrary, Lanzarote, La Graciosa, and the Canary Islands have been showing their solidarity and humanitarian treatment to the people who arrive on our coasts in small boats looking for a better future for decades; but it is about making better use of the resources that already exist and complying with the agreements of the Canarian Pact for Migration, which requires that any action that is intended to be carried out on this matter requires coordination between the central government and the administrations of the Archipelago”, added the nationalist municipal spokesperson.

Appearances

Held at the Güime Sociocultural Center, the meeting was also attended by the senator for the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, Pedro San Ginés; the Secretary of Organization and president of the autonomous Nationalist Parliamentary Group, David Toledo; and the other two CC councilors in San Bartolomé, Eduardo Díaz and Corín Machín; and during its course, the appearances of the ministers Ángel Víctor Torres and Fernando Marlaska in the Senate at the request of CC were projected so that they could give explanations on the matter.

As explained in the meeting, in both appearances, the intention of the Government of Spain to build a 12,000 square meter "macro-center" for the reception of adult migrants in the municipality of San Bartolomé in the municipality of San Bartolomé was evident, where tests have been carried out for several weeks on state-owned land located in the area known as El Polvorín.
