"There are no pests of any kind in our infrastructures." This is how Canal Gestión Lanzarote has responded after San Bartolomé made public that it has asked the company to carry out "urgent" cleaning and maintenance work on the sewage system of Playa Honda and Güime. The Councilor for Health of San Bartolomé, David Rocío, met this week with representatives of the company and, according to reports from the City Council, conveyed to its representatives the "complaints" of residents of these locations.
In that statement, the City Council explained that Rocío had asked the company for the "correct maintenance of the sewage system" to "avoid problems that affect residents such as unwanted pests or bad odors, among others." This Friday, the response from Canal Gestión has arrived, which through a statement has assured that there is no "any type of problem such as unwanted pests or the presence of rats" in the network. It has also stressed that the sewage system of the island is subjected "periodically and constantly to reviews and rat extermination treatments."
"This information, with the evidence that corroborates it, is forwarded punctually to the city councils when they request it, in the hope that they can inform their residents," the company adds. Regarding the meeting held with the Councilor of San Bartolomé, Canal Gestión Lanzarote states that in that meeting it "reported on the actions that are carried out in this regard, not only in San Bartolomé but in the rest of the island, providing clear evidence of the non-existence of any type of pest in the sewage network as of today."
The company points out that the information that the City Council sent to the media, explaining that it had urged Canal to carry out these cleanings to avoid these problems "that have affected the residents," sends "an erroneous message to our subscribers, as it could be understood that we do not carry out the corresponding maintenance of the networks that are our responsibility." For this reason, the statement explains, "we are obliged to step forward and clarify this point."
"Canal Gestión Lanzarote confirms that from the first moment it took charge of the supply and sanitation service of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, it designed a plan for maintenance, review and continuous treatment of the networks to avoid, precisely, the presence of rats or any other type of pest. Since then until now, the control we exercise confirms the cleanliness of these infrastructures," adds the company's statement. To conclude, Canal Gestión highlights that "on more than one occasion" it has "warned the city councils that the presence of rats, as well as insects such as cockroaches, has been detected in other conduits that are not our responsibility."
