Representatives of the seven Lanzarote town councils, Seprona agents, technicians from the Cabildo of Lanzarote and members of the Canary Islands Hunting Federation, the New Society of Hunters of Lanzarote and the animal protection associations 'Sara' and 'Huella a Huella' attended this Monday the meeting convened by the councillor responsible for the Hunting Area of the first Island Corporation, Antonio Morales, with the aim of addressing "the problem of animal abandonment on the island".
One of the main agreements reached at the meeting, explained Morales, "has been to carry out in a coordinated manner an awareness campaign to try to prevent as far as possible the abandonment of animals in Lanzarote". The campaign will involve "the publication of a video that will be broadcast in the media and social networks, as well as the distribution of informative printed material in schools", he added.
On the other hand, the councillor conveyed to the municipal representatives "the willingness of the Cabildo to collaborate with the town councils in providing space in the facilities of the Agricultural and Experimental Farm of Tahíche when the municipal shelters are overwhelmed". In this sense, the first Island Corporation requested the town councils "to draw up municipal censuses, as well as to unify criteria in the protocols that are followed when collecting stray animals".
In order to "follow up on the commitments reached and try to alleviate as much as possible this problem that especially affects dogs", said the councillor, the attendees at the meeting agreed to hold regular meetings, with the next one scheduled for next December.
