The Cabildo of Lanzarote has formalized this Thursday the agreement by which the agreement of aid to public transport will be extended to the entire year 2023. In this way, the free buses that have been applied on the island since September in the Canarian Resident Bonus will continue during the next year and will allow the Island Institution to continue promoting the use of collective public transport.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo and Minister of Transport, Marcos Bergaz, signed this agreement this Thursday, together with the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres.
Dolores Corujo celebrated that "finally a protocol has been made in which the framework of coordination between the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Councils is defined to configure the implementation measures of the 100% discount on the price of season tickets and multi-trip tickets for land public transport of the islands, urban and interurban, in the period from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023".
"We appreciate that the Cabildos have had a voice in this matter and that we have managed to subscribe to a fundamental measure for citizens, which will have broad positive effects on the population, especially on those people who need public transport in their day to day," insisted the President.
For his part, the Minister of Transport, Marcos Bergaz, recalled that "in Lanzarote we have been with this active measure since September, allowing workers and students who meet some minimum requirements to travel at no cost on the island buses" and highlighted "the great news that this can continue in 2023 on the Island".
In addition, the Minister pointed out, "this aims to promote the rational and orderly use of the land public transport system frequently, including in this mobility policy the season tickets and nominative multi-trip tickets associated with the Canarian Resident Bonus and its modalities".
"The next step after fulfilling our commitment to extend this agreement will be to open new borders and try to ensure that free transport reaches other groups that need it and, in general, the largest possible number of people who want to contribute to the care of our island and the environment by taking public transport," concluded the Minister.
Information on current free passes
The Island Corporation recalls that, on a transitional basis until February 28, people with 'wallet passes' that affect young people, the unemployed, people with disabilities, pensioners, special pensioners, large families, and students can travel for free on interurban transport.
Regarding users who have or acquire the Canarian Resident Bonus, the gratuity of their trips will be applicable from January 1 to December 31, 2023, indicating that from March 1, it will be an essential requirement to make, at least, 15 trips per month.
