The Cabildo of Lanzarote hosted this Tuesday a first institutional meeting with the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin Wines of Lanzarote. In this first official meeting, the protection of one of the places with the most natural, landscape and heritage value of the Island was discussed as a preferential matter, and the recent award by the Cabildo of the elaboration of the Special Plan for the Protected Landscape of La Geria was reported.
Oswaldo Betancort, and the Councilor for Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín Tavío, conveyed to the representatives of the Council, "the commitment of the current Government group to comply in a timely manner with the 13-month deadline to grant the fair and deserved recognition and treatment to La Geria as a Protected Landscape", a statement justified by the exclusive form of exploitation of the vine, compatible with the conservation of the natural values of one of the most appreciated areas of Lanzarote at the landscape level.
“La Geria and all those people who work to maintain a unique space in the world, will have special treatment to continue with their wine-growing work"
“La Geria and all those people who work to maintain a unique space in the world, will have special treatment to continue with their wine-growing work, as well as a specific line of financing that we will demand from the Government of the Canary Islands”, assured Betancort, who, precisely, will receive this Wednesday the new Minister of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, so that "he knows first-hand what are the main demands of the primary sector of the Island".
The Regulatory Council as a tourist sponsor of Lanzarote
In addition to constituting one of the most characteristic agricultural landscapes of Lanzarote, the fact that La Geria enjoys inimitable aspects at the tourist level, "is a reason of weight for the Regulatory Council - as guarantor of the quality of the wines produced on the Island and of a unique cultivation system - to be part of the Society for the External Promotion of Lanzarote".
In this sense, Oswaldo Betancort has proposed "including the Council as an active body in the machinery of the main promotion entity of Lanzarote", to which belong, in addition to the Cabildo, Epel-Cacts, Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Asolan, Tourist Federation of Lanzarote, Felapyme, and the seven municipalities of the Island.
