The Lanzarote parliamentarian of the Canarian Nationalist Group, Oswaldo Betancort, has this Tuesday obtained the firm commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands for boutique cruises to begin operating in the port of Playa Blanca starting next season, between autumn 2025 and spring 2026.
During his speech in the Plenary, Betancort highlighted the joint effort of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility to "make a strategic proposal a reality" that, according to what he defended, seeks to "reposition the tourist brand of Lanzarote under the slogan "less is more", attracting tourism with greater purchasing power and less environmental impact".
“We are working with determination to re-qualify the destination. Betting on boutique cruises is an opportunity to attract a more demanding visitor profile, more respectful of our environment and with greater economic return for the island”, stressed Betancort, who also defended that Playa Blanca meets all the conditions to become "a port of reference for this segment: security, modernization, exclusivity and proximity to the main attractions of Lanzarote".
The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, publicly acknowledged the decisive role of the president of the Cabildo in the advancement of this initiative. In addition, he thanked the president for his drive by traveling to the international cruise fair in Miami, managing to attract the interest of the main companies that operate in the Atlantic.
As confirmed by the minister, the infrastructure of the port of Playa Blanca "is considered the best in the Canary Islands at the moment and is already prepared to host small and medium-sized cruises, which will bring exclusivity, sustainability and diversification to the tourism model in the south of the island".
The arrival of boutique cruises represents, according to Betancort, "a step forward in the economic diversification of Lanzarote, offering a high-level tourist alternative that directly benefits local commerce, restaurants, agricultural, livestock and fishing activity, and that is aligned with the principles of sustainability and environmental respect that define the island as a Biosphere Reserve".
Betancort concluded his speech insisting that “positioning Playa Blanca as an exclusive, quiet destination with a luxury cultural, commercial and leisure offer is key to diversifying our economy, promoting local products and strengthening the Lanzarote brand as a quality destination”.
