The socialist deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa asked the head of Public Works of the Canary Islands Government, the nationalist Pablo Rodríguez, this Friday about the priority actions on roads for the island of volcanoes.

“At this rate you are on your way to a lost legislature in terms of road investments in Lanzarote, Minister.” This is how the Lanzarote deputy, Marcos Bergaz, expressed himself during the question asked to the Minister of Public Works of the Canarian Government, the nationalist Pablo Rodríguez, about the priorities in terms of roads for Lanzarote.

This intervention has taken place almost halfway through the legislature and after two budgets of the regional government, formed by the Canarian Coalition (CC) and the Popular Party (PP), "without any of the new planned road actions having materialized," he says.

In this line, it should be remembered that the Canary Islands budget for 2024 included 2.5 million for the LZ Órzola - Guatiza; 7.5 million for the LZ-2 connection with the LZ-3 in Arrecife; 4.1 million for the duplication of the LZ-40 in Puerto del Carmen; 678,697 euros intervention Yaiza-Arrecife new airport highway; or more than one million for the Playa Honda underpass.

Similarly, in 2025 it included 3.3 million for the LZ-2 connection with the LZ-3 in Arrecife; 4.1 million for the duplication of the LZ-40 in Puerto del Carmen; 321.82 euros intervention Yaiza-Arrecife new airport highway; or 511,377 euros for the Playa Honda underpass.

“Well, except for giving continuity to the endless execution of the Playa Honda underpass, initiated by the Government of Ángel Víctor Torres (PSOE) and with Sebastián Franquis as Minister of Public Works, nothing else has been tendered, awarded or started when talking about roads,” stressed Marcos Bergaz.

“In fact, we are halfway through 2025, and it is confirmed again that they ´painted´ items in the budgets that they will not execute this year either, despite the fact that they sold some realistic accounts, but there is a long way from saying to doing,” lamented Bergaz.

“And it does not surprise us, -continued the deputy- with ups and downs such as announcing that your Government that the duplication of the LZ-40 in Puerto del Carmen would go through the simplified environmental assessment process, given the urgency of the intervention, to later retract and go to the ordinary process.”

“Or with mysteries such as the improvement of the Órzola – Guatiza road, whose budget item of 2.5 million planned in 2024, has disappeared from the 2025 accounts. Without forgetting the LZ-5 that, two years after commissioning the project and spending more than one million on it, neither the Cabildo of Lanzarote, nor the Government of which you are a part, know what they will do.”

“At this rate, the mandate will pass without significant investments or improvements in terms of roads in Lanzarote, Minister, as even your own government partner in the Cabildo is already telling you,” concluded the deputy and spokesperson in Teguise, Marcos Bergaz.
