The socialist deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz, has described as “intolerable” that the Government of the Canary Islands did not activate additional provision number 64 of the autonomous Budget of 2025, which allowed to enable up to 15 million additional euros to face the water crisis that affects, among other islands, Lanzarote.

During the plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands this Tuesday, Bergaz asked the Minister of Water, Manuel Miranda (CC), about the projects financed under this budgetary provision. The minister himself confirmed that it had not been activated due to lack of credit throughout the year 2025”.

The aforementioned provision contemplated the possibility of increasing the resources allocated to hydraulic investments, improvement of water quality, and actions linked to the water emergency, through the incorporation of unforeseen income or reductions in other budgetary items.

Bergaz recalled that this forecast was included in the budgets for 2024, 2025, and 2026 as a “saving” measure according to the Government of Coalición Canaria (CC) and Partido Popular (PP) to compensate for the insufficiency of initial investments in water matters. In this regard, the deputy stressed that Lanzarote maintains the water emergency extended, suffers recurrent cuts in the supply, and registers losses exceeding 50% of the produced flow.

“We are in February 2026, the citizenry is witnessing a rise in the price of water and, however, it confirms to me the neglect of the Canarian Government and the Cabildo of Lanzarote by not activating additional resources that the budget itself allowed. Of course, it is intolerable,” he affirmed.

“This is how it goes for us, it is regrettable that they did not activate these fifteen million for the islands in a water emergency, which would come like May water to improve the water crisis we suffer, among other islands, in Lanzarote,” Bergaz stressed.

“With the needs that exist when talking about production, distribution, sanitation or reuse of water on the island and Canarias, it is to demand accountability from the Canarian Government and the Island Council,” concluded Bergaz.
