More than 300 people attended the Arrecife Civic Center this Friday to support the Popular Party's candidacy for the Arrecife City Council. The candidate for re-election, Astrid Pérez, made her entrance into the hall, which erupted in applause and shouts of encouragement to the current mayor of the council and island president of the party.
The act was marked by emotion as she dedicated the initial part of her speech to thanking each of the PP councilors for the work they have done at the head of their areas in this term that is closing and, especially, to Saro González and Ángela Hernandez, who will no longer be on the front line. "It has been four very hard years for everyone, with many obstacles and many obstacles, but it has been worth it because the Arrecife we have today is very different from the one we found," she acknowledged.
In this sense, Astrid Pérez made a brief review of the Arrecife that she inherited in 2019 and that was in a situation of "total abandonment and completely dismantled." "This is the legacy that the governments of CC and the PSOE have left in the city, a city in ruins, because they had not even drafted projects to receive the money that corresponds to us, which is ours, from the cooperation plans of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and that gives us an idea of how little or nothing they cared about the city."
Faced with this situation, the mayoress and candidate detailed some of the most outstanding advances of these four years, highlighting the transfer of land to the Government of the Canary Islands for the construction of 400 social homes in Maneje and for the Argana health center; the creation of the soup kitchen; the integral conditioning of the schools; the rehabilitation of sports facilities worth 5 million euros; the rainwater works; the complete renovation of the city's traffic light network; the new police station or the transformation of urban spaces such as Pedro Alcántara Square or Tenderete Street, among others."
"Now is when Arrecife begins to be reborn and we are not going to throw in the towel because we want to complete the transformation that the city has begun," claimed the current mayoress, who declared her "pride" for the city, "because even with all its defects, it is our city and we are committed to it." "That is the strength that inspires us for what is to come because it is 'now' when we are building the city," she said to the applause of those present.
The candidate for re-election clearly acknowledged that she would like to complete the project that has already begun in Arrecife and expressed her willingness to continue working to "give back to our elders everything they have given us throughout their lives; to give our young people the opportunities they deserve; for the merchants who find it increasingly difficult to raise the bars; for the most vulnerable families and for the boys and girls of Arrecife who deserve inclusive, modern and safe parks and play areas."
"For all of them and for this city we cannot afford to take a step back and return to square one. Those who now say they are going to do this and that, had the opportunity, which has not been few, and did nothing. That is the great difference with the PP," said Astrid Pérez, who aspires to achieve an absolute majority to advance in the achievement of the PP project for Arrecife. To this end, Pérez has configured a work team that is up to the needs of the capital. A renewed team that she said "is made up of committed, hard-working people with experience and qualified to govern."
During her speech, Pérez also had words of thanks for the councilor Jacobo Medina, whom she thanked for the support that the Cabildo gave to Arrecife from Public Works and whose departure from the island government marked a before and after in the collaboration between the two administrations.
A more committed and more investing Cabildo
For his part, the candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa began his speech expressing his conviction that next May 28 "the citizens are going to say yes to the good management, the work and the courage that the PP represents."
"Saying yes to the PP is saying yes to the future, it is leaving behind the confrontations that socialists and nationalists have starred in, and that have taken so much time away from Lanzarote and Ls Graciosa." Medina defended the need for a "PP presidency" in the island's Cabildo because "it is the only way to move forward and carry out all those issues in which CC and the Socialist Party have failed."
The candidate has assured that the Popular Party represents an opportunity for the two islands, because "let no one doubt that with a PP presidency we are going to carry out all the planning instruments from the PIOl, to the PRUG, passing through the Special Plan of La Geria." Jacobo Medina reaffirmed his commitment to the university campus and to a new public transport contract that guarantees mobility by bus throughout the island and a better service.
Regarding the controversy opened by Corujo about the tourist saturation of the island, Medina reiterated his commitment to "tourist excellence", to "quality over quantity". "We do say 'welcome' to English tourists," Medina simplified.
