Astrid Pérez addresses with the collectives of La Graciosa the challenges of the triple insularity

The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, held a meeting this Friday with representatives of different groups from La Graciosa to learn first-hand about their main needs and concerns and to highlight the work that different administrations are carrying out to improve the services and quality of life of its residents.

During the meeting, one of the highlighted issues was the triple insularity that characterizes life in La Graciosa, a reality that particularly affects access to certain services and involves regular trips to Lanzarote for matters related to health, education, procedures, shopping, or work activities.

The groups also conveyed the need to continue advancing in water, sanitation, electricity, transport, waste, infrastructure, security, and mobility, as well as in the stability of health and educational services. Some of these demands, they pointed out, have been on the table for decades.

Pérez highlighted the importance of continuing to coordinate efforts between the Teguise City Council, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the State, with the aim of providing effective responses to the singularities of the eighth island.

The president also addressed the need to reconcile the protection of the territory with the lives of the residents, especially in the development of the PRUG, as well as the challenges arising from tourist activity and the pressure on services.

“The challenge is that future generations can continue to live here and maintain their quality of life,” said Pérez, who stressed that listening directly to those who live in La Graciosa is fundamental to understanding their needs and continuing to advance in solutions adapted to their reality.

Representatives from the Asamblea Graciosera, Impulsa La Graciosa, the Association of Seniors ‘Las Gracioseras 2’, the Parish Community of La Graciosa, and Maullidos/Animal Protection, as well as other groups linked to education, youth, sustainability, fishing, and the cultural and neighborhood life of the island, participated in the meeting.

The president has highlighted the importance of listening directly to those who live and work in La Graciosa and has emphasized the role of its groups in defending the island's needs.

The visit began with a meeting with Margarita Páez Guadalupe, ‘Margarona’, a historic defender of the services and rights of the residents of La Graciosa, whose career is linked to demands such as the arrival of electricity, water, telephone, and the school.
