Astrid Pérez officially becomes the new president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and the future of the mayor's office of the Arrecife City Council is on hold until Yonathan de León takes over the capital of Lanzarote. This was announced by the still mayoress in an open letter to her neighbors.
After a vote among the new deputies that make up the regional Chamber, the popular candidate has been crowned by an absolute majority as the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, a milestone for the island of Lanzarote, being the first time that a woman from Lanzarote has held this position. Astrid Pérez was the only candidate of the Popular Party who obtained representation in the constituency for Lanzarote.
As La Voz advanced, after the agreement between the Popular Party and the Nationalists to share the regional government, the president of the Popular Party in the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, offered the position to the still mayoress of Arrecife, before she took the baton of command of the capital. Pérez assumed the mayoralty just a week ago, but now she will have to resign from the position to perform her new function.
During her speech, Pérez stressed that "citizens expect us to work hard to change and improve their lives and to abandon the worst statistical data in the country." In addition, she revealed that Parliament has many challenges in these times of change and uncertainty and has pledged to defend social justice, the uniqueness of the islands, solidarity, progress and the unity of the archipelago.
The majority of the votes were resolved between blank ballots and those that supported Astrid Pérez, except for the four issued by the far-right Vox formation for the candidate Nicasio Galván.
"We are leaving behind, without a doubt, four years of parliamentarianism that will go down in the history of our government," said the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands in office, the socialist Gustavo Matos, before saying goodbye to the position he held for four years. At the same time, he wished good luck to the deputies who are taking on this new legislature.
Before the eyes of the former president of the Government of the Canary Islands, the popular José Manuel Soria, the new government was formed in two hands between the Popular Party and the Canarian Coalition. Meanwhile, the until now regional president Ángel Víctor Torres and winner in votes and seats of the past elections, promised his position before the applause of the bench.
The current plenary of the Parliament of the Canary Islands is composed of 23 deputies from the Socialist Party, 19 from the Canarian Coalition, 15 from the Popular Party, five from New Canary Islands-Canarian Bloc, four from Vox, three from the Gomera Socialist Group and one from the Independent Herrera Association.
It will be the candidate of the Canarian Coalition, the second most voted list, who will assume the presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands for the next four years, with Fernando Clavijo at the head.
On the island of Lanzarote, the socialist candidacy to the Parliament of the Canary Islands was the most voted and obtained three seats, the Canarian Coalition the second most supported list with also three seats, the Popular Party with one and New Canary Islands-Canarian Bloc with one.
Of these, eight are contributed by the island of Lanzarote. María Dolores Corujo, Marcos Hernández and Lucía Olga Tejera have sworn the position as deputies; the nationalists Migdalia Machín, the multi-indicted Pedro San Ginés, who promised his role as deputy of the Parliament of the Canary Islands without having yet resolved the legal cases open against him, as well as David Jesús Toledo; and Astrid Pérez as the only parliamentarian of the Popular Party for Lanzarote. In addition to Yoné Caraballo, who is making his debut with Nueva Canarias.
Plus the ninth one that arrives through the regional constituency Alicia Pérez, daughter of the former president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote Enrique Pérez Parrilla.
The age table was formed by Alicia Pérez Hernández from Lanzarote, being the youngest person in the Chamber, who was in charge of calling one by one the new deputies who will form the Parliament of the Canary Islands. While, the also conejera Lucía Olga Tejera handed out the medals.
Also, the nationalist Ana Oramas will be first vice-president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and Gustavo Matos (PSOE) will be second vice-president.
