The mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Yonathan de León, announced this Monday that a street in Arrecife will be named after Antonio Tejera, Favorite Son of Lanzarote and a reference of Canarian folklore.

The Lanzaroteño passed away last September 2025 at the age of 92, leaving behind an indelible legacy in the world of folklore.

De León has reported that the street currently called Ramón Manchón will be renamed Antonio Corujo Tejera. In this regard, the mayor has pointed out that "Manchón will remain on the street map of our city on another street, the until now C67".

Known for his "duende" since childhood, Corujo discovered his calling at the age of nine in his father's barbershop, where he listened to his grandfather sing when the holidays were forbidden. Those first experiences marked the beginning of a lifetime dedicated to the musical and dance traditions of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands.

He was a member of the San Bartolomé Easter Ranch and a tireless disseminator of Víctor Fernández Gopar's coplas, Corujo turned the sound of limpets —inherited from his father— into an unmistakable hallmark of his performances, with which he traveled not only the islands but also international stages.

Beyond his artistic career, Antonio Corujo was part of a family dedicated to folklore: his children have continued that path, between teaching and the creation of instruments such as timples and guitars, while grandchildren and great-grandchildren are already beginning to take the baton.

In one of his latest interviews, the artist expressed his confidence that folklore "is not going to be lost", convinced that it will continue to evolve as it has done so far. At his many years, he was still performing at various events, true to his promise to keep singing "as long as he had strength".
