The Arrecife City Council has put out to tender this Friday the rehabilitation of the Municipal Fish Market to recover the commercial life that places like this and the Municipal Market had in past decades.

The Public Sector Contracting Platform has published the official announcement since July 1 for "the execution of the adaptation, modernization, and commissioning works of the old Municipal Fish Market building in Arrecife," which will form a tandem, after its modernization works, with La Recova as the Municipal Food Market, which will be complemented by a gastronomic area, both in its current premises and in the roof area (terrace). Interested companies have until July 22, 2026, to submit their proposals for this tender.

The mayor, Yonathan de León, has reported that the City Council has the close collaboration of the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by the popular minister Jéssica de León, for the financing of this work. The official tender has been promoted by Gestión de Proyectos y Estudios Turísticos en Canarias S.A.U. MP, integrated into the Ministry of Tourism of the Canary Islands.

Yonathan de León has highlighted that the Fish Market will join La Recova, and the recent recovery and transformation of Plaza de Las Palmas, within the municipal initiatives to enhance the value of this entire historic enclave of Arrecife.

The technical project, drafted by the Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Commerce and Tourism, led by the spokesperson councilor of the PP, Eli Merino, has the approval of the Heritage Unit of the Cabildo, due to its location in the influence zone of the historic center of Arrecife, near the church of San Ginés, and the La Recova building.

Eli Merino has underlined that the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Municipal Fish Market building will allow its recovery with a modern approach for the commercialization of seafood products, as well as for preparation and tasting as a gastronomic area. This project will form a tandem with La Recova, whose recovery works tender will be published this summer.

The Councilor for Commerce and Tourism, Eli Merino, has remarked that both the rehabilitation of La Recova and La Pescadería Municipal have the mandatory approvals from Heritage, and the City Council "has been working in a planned manner for these tenders that will allow the recovery of both properties for which they were designed from their origins: points of sale for the agricultural and fishing products of Lanzarote and La Graciosa".

Eli Merino has emphasized that, with the new design, "it will be possible to revitalize these enclaves for the commercialization, elaboration, and tasting of products from the countryside and sea, supporting these local commercial sectors". Arrecife will have a renewed circuit near the sea, and in a privileged enclave of the city's history, for the commercialization and consumption of KM0 products.

Rehabilitation of the historic center of Arrecife for its relaunch

Following the complete rehabilitation of the Plaza de Las Palmas, works completed last autumn, the exterior conditioning of the facades of the parish hall and parish library has been added in recent weeks, and during this summer the execution of the projects for La Recova, and the complete rehabilitation of the José Ramírez Cerdá Park, will be put out to tender, with an investment of approximately two million euros.

Arrecife, epicenter of commerce, leisure, and gastronomy

In addition to these important projects, with financial backing, the City Council continues with more transformation actions in the Arrecife Open Commercial Zone with a series of works that will be announced shortly by the mayor and the Councilor for Commerce and Tourism.

The uniqueness of this Arrecife Open Commercial Zone, a few steps from the Plaza de Las Palmas, La Recova, and La Pescadería, in a nerve center with the upcoming Charco de San Ginés - where there is already a solid gastronomic offer, lies in being one of the most visited places by residents, and tourists, including the nearly 700,000 cruise passengers received by the port of Arrecife, and whose calls are concentrated between September and April, in the so-called autumn and winter season.

This high presence of tourists, plus the resident population, "provides a high volume of potential customers to the commercial, leisure, and restaurant establishments operating in Arrecife".
