The Department of Cleaning of the Arrecife City Council, headed by Jacobo Lemes, has carried out a total of 69 interventions related to illegal dumping of belongings and waste in different parts of the municipality since last February 1.

Of these actions, 42 have resulted in proposed sanctions for infractions of the Municipal Cleaning Ordinance, six of which correspond to companies and the rest, 36, to individuals. The other 27 actions consisted of requests to residents and companies for the cleaning of plots of land they own, with those responsible collaborating after the municipal notice.

The Councilor for Cleaning, Jacobo Lemes, has warned that the City Council "will continue to act forcefully against those who continue to irresponsibly abandon waste and belongings".

"We are not going to normalize behaviors that harm the image of Arrecife, generate health problems, and force us to allocate public resources to clean what some deliberately dirty. Whoever violates the ordinance will be sanctioned," states the councilor.

Lemes also highlights the increase in citizen collaboration to detect these types of uncivil behaviors.

"More and more residents are collaborating to identify those who dirty the city. This citizen involvement is being fundamental to act quickly and effectively. The majority of citizens want a clean and well-maintained city, and they are showing that they are not looking the other way," he affirms.

The municipal official also underlines the continuous work being carried out by the Cleaning Area to reinforce the control and monitoring of these infractions.

"We are intensifying surveillance, responding to notices practically daily, and processing files with rigor. We will continue to act because the abandonment of waste and belongings cannot go unpunished," he adds.

75 proposed sanctions in five months

These 42 new proposed sanctions are added to the 33 already processed during the months of December 2025 and January 2026, the data of which was released last March.

In total, the Arrecife Cleaning Department has proposed 75 sanctions in the last five months for infractions related to illegal dumping and abandonment of waste and belongings in public spaces.

Jacobo Lemes insists that the Department will continue to apply the Municipal Ordinance "firmly and without exceptions" and reiterates the call for civility and citizen co-responsibility to keep the capital of Lanzarote clean.
