The Arrecife City Council has published in the BOP, in its edition of this past Friday the 14th, a new line of economic aid to collaborate and support outstanding athletes. The Councilor for Sports, Eli Merino, has assigned in the current budgets of 2026 a specific line, with 100,000 euros, for the granting of subsidies to outstanding athletes. Applications can now be registered by interested parties. They have 10 business days (after publication in the BOP) to submit their applications.

According to the bases, published in the BOP, “athletes who meet the following requirements may be beneficiaries: Have administrative residency in the municipality of Arrecife, uninterruptedly for the two years prior to the date of application submission. Be 16 years of age or older at the date of application submission. Have a valid federative license issued by the corresponding sports federation”.

Furthermore, it is specified that they must have “achieved one of the following sporting merits in official individual or pair competitions, according to the modality approved by the Higher Sports Council: qualifying between first and third in the Canary Islands Championship; qualifying between first and third in the Spanish Championship; qualifying between first and tenth in the European or World Championships”.

The purpose of this subsidy is the promotion of individual or pair federated athletes, according to the sports modality approved by the Higher Sports Council, residing in the municipality of Arrecife with a minimum of 2 years of registration, with a valid sports license, who have achieved relevant results in official federative competitions during the year 2025 (for sports whose season runs from January to December) or the 2025-2026 season for those sports whose season spans two years (normally from September to August of the following year).

The Arrecife City Council has foreseen that these aids, which can amount to up to 2,999.99 euros per beneficiary, may be compatible with any other type of subsidy, aid, income, or resources for the same purpose, unless they come from the Arrecife City Council itself for the same purpose. In no case may the total amount of the aids exceed the cost of the subsidized activity.

Mayor Yonathan de León has remarked that “these subsidies aim to help outstanding athletes with their many expenses in their ascents to competitions where they achieve podiums, where the cost of insularity is a handicap in their competitions, many of them regional, national or world”.

Councilwoman Eli Merino has underlined “her satisfaction for achieving, from her department, the launch of this type of aid for the first time, which consolidates the municipal strategy of turning Arrecife into the capital of sports and events, and where outstanding athletes are true ambassadors of our city".
