The Arrecife City Council is negotiating and holding talks with "important" businessmen linked to leisure at sea to try to find a way out for the Islote de la Fermina, which should have opened its doors in 2008 and now presents a regrettable state of deterioration. The mayor of Arrecife, Manolo Fajardo Feo, has pointed out that the negotiations are being carried out together with the Cabildo to "give it more power and make it more likely to succeed".

The mayor did not want to give more details about these conversations with businessmen. "I understand that they are eager to know, but we are at the beginning and I try to be cautious with public management and with the steps I take," he said on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.

The mayor would like to reach an agreement with a businessman before the end of the legislature, as he fears that he will not be able to carry out this infrastructure, which was even inaugurated. "It may very well be the thorn that remains stuck in this legislature, but I have not stopped making efforts to avoid it," said the mayor, who is confident that these conversations will come to fruition.

Fajardo Feo recalled that when he was Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands he "promoted" this work because "it was European money and it was going to be lost". Finally, this project, conceived by César Manrique, was completed. Its opening has been announced imminently since 2008 but, instead of opening its doors, the space has been consumed by the passage of time, the destruction of the "vandals" and the lack of surveillance.

"Due to negligence it has ended up like this"

In this sense, the mayor has pointed out that the "City Council, with the previous mayor (Cándido Reguera), decided to remove the security" of the infrastructure and the "vandals did what they did". "Now we have that dead man and we will see what we can do, because there are no resources," he admitted, which is why he believes that reaching an agreement with businessmen is the "only possible way".

"It is one of the best spaces we have in Arrecife and it is a pity that due to negligence it has ended up like this," acknowledged the mayor.
