Arrecife honors the memory of the Cruz del Mar sailors

The deputy mayor of Arrecife, Echedey Eugenio, participated this Saturday in the tribute held next to the monument ‘The light that guides us’, erected in Puerto Naos as a lighthouse, in memory of the sailors of the Cruz del Mar who were machine-gunned in 1978 while fishing in waters near the African coast. The event brought together family members, institutional representatives, and citizens to pay tribute to the victims of a tragedy that forever marked the history of Arrecife, Lanzarote, and the Canary Islands.

“This act reaffirms our commitment to the dignity, justice, and recognition of those who will never be forgotten. As long as we continue to remember them, the light of Amador Hernández, Chano Cañada, Alfredo Marrero, Juan Suárez, Agustín Hernández, José María Hernández, and Rafael Salas will continue to shine,” stated Echedey Eugenio, who also conveyed “a strong and heartfelt embrace” to the victims’ families and highlighted the importance of keeping their memory alive.

During the tribute, Eugenio wanted to especially recognize the work of the survivor of the tragedy and president of the Cruz del Mar Association, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, as well as the involvement of the Parranda Marinera de Los Buches, promoters of an event that each year keeps the memory of the deceased sailors alive and contributes to preserving their legacy and that of a sacrificial labor so closely linked to the port city of Arrecife.
