Arrecife closes Manrique's sculpture during Carnival to "protect it from uncivil people"

The City Council emphasizes that “the image and memory of Manrique, the most international ecological artist from Lanzarote, deserves the respect of the city where he was born”

The Arrecife City Council has installed a protection enclosure next to the sculpture in homage to César Manrique, the city's favorite son, which was donated by a citizen collection coinciding with the centenary of the birth of the brilliant artist from Lanzarote. A measure adopted after the "uncivic acts" that took place last Carnival weekend, as La Voz already published.

This wooden enclosure, created and prepared by the City Council's Roads and Works personnel, will be installed from now on during days with massive events.

Last weekend, after the celebration of one of the carnival events in that area, numerous waste appeared thrown next to the sculpture of Manrique Cabrera. Residuos Lanzarote alerted on social networks about the lack of “respect and civility of groups of citizens for throwing waste in that area, where there were very close containers and reinforcement bins” for the Carnivals.

This waste was removed at the conclusion of the celebration of the event, within the deployment carried out by the Arrecife City Council. The mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, adopted “immediately”, after learning of this situation, the measure to proceed with the creation of these protective enclosures.

The mayor contacted directly with the members of the association Por César, the creator of the donation of the sculpture, who were informed of this municipal measure to “preserve the work and the image of the artist from Lanzarote”.

Yonathan de León detailed this Friday that he conveyed that he received “their approval and they appreciated that we were decisive”.
