The Councilor for Urban Planning and Technical Office of the Arrecife City Council, Maciot Cabrera, has expressed his satisfaction after the approval, in the Governing Board held this Wednesday, of the building permit for the Cruz Blanca project, an action that has all legal and technical guarantees and will allow the recovery of a space of great heritage and social value for the municipality.
The project, promoted by Cáritas Diócesis de Canarias, includes the rehabilitation and transformation of the Altavista area, where a new parish assistance center will be located for the social and community care of residents.
Cabrera has highlighted that the approval of this license "represents a decisive step after years of waiting and administrative procedures," emphasizing that "behind the Cruz Blanca there is a social and human objective: to recover a space for people and for service to the community."The municipal head of Urban Planning has stated that "it was essential to unblock this file, which had been pending for too long, because it is an initiative that combines heritage recovery with a primary social purpose."Likewise, Maciot Cabrera has highlighted the collaboration between public administrations and the role of the Cabildo de Lanzarote in financing and driving the project. "Institutional cooperation is key to carrying out actions that improve people's lives. The Cruz Blanca will be an example of how coordination between entities can transform neighborhoods and restore hope to our city," he stated. The councilor now trusts that, after the license is approved, construction can begin as soon as possible, respecting deadlines and guaranteeing all safety and quality conditions. The project will allow, in addition to recovering a heritage asset, revitalizing the Altavista area and providing it with a new space for social and community care
13 new homes with the approval of four residential projects
On the other hand, the Urban Planning Department of the Arrecife City Council today submitted to the Governing Board the approval of licenses for a total of 13 new homes spread across four different projects
According to the approved files, the legalization, renovation, and expansion of a three-story building between party walls for a single-family home are contemplated; the construction of a two-story building between party walls with four homes; and a staircase to access the roof and a laundry room in a two-story single-family home between party walls. In addition, another project for the expansion and change of use of a four-story building between party walls (up to seven homes) in the central area of Manolo Millares and Sol street has been given the green light
Maciot Cabrera highlights that "the approval of these projects means continuing to advance on the roadmap set out from the beginning of the term to respond to one of our neighbors' main concerns, which is access to decent housing. We are streamlining procedures and facilitating collaboration with private and public initiatives to expand Arrecife's residential stock."
These 13 new homes add to a very positive urban development record during 2025. With a month left until the end of the year, the department led by Cabrera has already granted around 500 housing permits over the last two years.
If both private initiatives and public promotions are added together, Arrecife could approach the record of 700 new homes by the end of this year, a milestone that represents an important step in alleviating the housing crisis and providing greater opportunities for access to housing in the municipality.
The head of the department highlights the efforts of the municipal technical team to speed up procedures and emphasizes that collaboration with entities like Gesplan allows for continuous improvement in service efficiency and prioritization of areas with the greatest demand. Cabrera stresses that "housing must be an engine of development and social cohesion; we will continue to promote the necessary solutions so that more and more families can establish their homes in Arrecife and look to the future with security".
