The state commercial company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (ACUAES), of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has put out to tender the contracts for the execution of the works for the expansion and improvement of the Tías wastewater treatment plant and impulsion lines from Puerto Calero, in Lanzarote.

The tender has been divided into two lots: the first corresponds to the works for the expansion of the Tías WWTP with a tender budget of 15,141,531 euros (IGIC excluded) and an execution period of 31 months.

The second lot refers to the works of pipelines and pumping from Puerto Calero. The tender budget for this contract amounts to 4,994,307 euros and the term is 17 months.

The tender for the works has been possible after the administrative approval of the project by the MITECO, a procedure that was notified to ACUAES on February 9.

The objective of this action is to enable the proper functioning of the existing sanitation and treatment facilities and compliance with the regulatory limits set for the treated effluent by Directive 91/271/EEC on the treatment of urban wastewater.

To do this, the capacity of the current treatment plant will be increased by 50%, equipping it with advanced treatment systems, which includes tertiary treatment for the reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural uses and irrigation of gardens and streets.

Once the works are completed, the treatment plant will serve a population of 99,600 equivalent inhabitants in the Tías, Puerto del Carmen, and Puerto Calero areas with a treatment flow rate of 12,000 m3/day.

In addition to the WWTP, a collector 3,228 meters long will be built, which will collect and transport the discharges from the Puerto Calero nucleus to the WWTP, and a pumping station in Puerto Calero.

The performance is completed with the execution, in later phases, of a new terrestrial section of the 3,214-meter-long outfall and the work on the submarine section. Conduits will also be executed between Yaiza and Uga and the EBARES of Yaiza, Uga and Barranco del Agua, as well as a regenerated water tank, solar sludge drying and a self-consumption photovoltaic installation.

The objective of ACUAES is that the works be awarded in the next month of May, so that the works can begin this very summer.

The project is part of the set of actions that ACUAES is carrying out in Lanzarote with a total planned investment of 37.5 million, in accordance with the agreement and subsequent addendum signed with the Lanzarote Water Consortium. Said agreement includes the construction of a new treatment plant and a terrestrial outfall of 2,640 meters in Arrecife, currently in advanced execution.
