The employees of UTE Tabaiba, formed by the companies Señalcon and Aceinsa, demonstrated this Thursday at 8:00 a.m. in front of the Cabildo of Lanzarote to protest the decision of the first Institution to no longer count on the services of the maintenance company for the roadsides, parks and gardens.
“We have an agreement with the Cabildo for two years of contract plus two years of extensions. The two years are up now, on March 23, and this Wednesday we learned that the Cabildo will no longer be counting on us for the island's maintenance work,” says the representative of the UTE Tabaiba workers, Klever Sánchez.
The entity states that “the decision on whether or not to extend the contract had to have been communicated two months in advance, but not a week before the end”. In addition, they criticize that, if they do not want to count on their services, “the Cabildo should subrogate the personnel, as established in article 27 of the construction sector agreement.”
The representative of the UTE Tabaiba workers explains that 28 people will be left without employment after the Cabildo's “unexpected” decision. “We don't want to go to unemployment because we won't get the same amount and they will forget about us. There are many families that depend on this job and we don't know what to do,” adds Sánchez.
Sánchez points out that, if the demonstration does not end “in an agreement with the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo,” the workers will call a strike. “We were talking to UGT and to call a strike, an order must be obtained from the Government of the Canary Islands, that is why we have decided to first hold a small demonstration. But if we are not heard, we will hold a general strike and we will stand every day at the door of the Cabildo until we achieve our objective”, concludes the representative of the UTE Tabaiba workers.
