Urbaser workers in Arrecife do not rule out going on strike. The controversy continues around the company that manages waste in the capital of Lanzarote and also in Yaiza. The general secretary of the General Union of Workers (UGT) in Lanzarote, César Reyes, spoke this Thursday on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to explain the situation of the workers of the company in charge of collecting and managing waste in the capital.
"There is a tremendously difficult situation. The colleagues have been up to the task, we have managed to stop those dismissals that were being carried out objectively by the company and it was important to recognize that important fact", he highlighted during his intervention in the morning show Buenos días, Lanzarote.
"We are in a moment of collective bargaining, where positions are tremendously opposed and I hope and wish that we can find a solution in the short term or else we have the conflict served", he advanced. In this line, Reyes has shown himself open to calling a strike in the capital of Lanzarote if a solution is not reached.
The general secretary of the union on the island has stated that "there are abysmal differences between the positions of the company and the representatives of the workers". For this reason, they are going to request a meeting with the Arrecife City Council to tackle the situation.
The conflict has two aspects. Firstly, "issues of the service itself" due to "a lack of coordination by the company" and, secondly, "the pure negotiation of the collective agreement, where we are trying to move forward with a collective agreement, which on the part of the company has put on the table positions of no exit."
In this line, he highlighted that "the agreement has been in place since December 2023 and we are currently in the negotiation periods. In view of the fact that the positions remain distant, we are going to try to unblock it before we find ourselves in a situation that nobody will like."
"Everything stems from a contract that was disastrous, not only for the city, the service and the workers. Part of the main problem of that union that was signed at that time", Reyes concluded.
