Canal Gestión Lanzarote has once again suspended the supply of drinking water in the rural areas of the center and south of the island "as a result of a major breakdown in the energy recovery turbine of line number 2 of the Janubio desalination plant, in Yaiza." This was announced by the Water Consortium, which adds that this "has not been the only incident that has arisen in the past few hours."
In addition, another breakdown was recorded in the engine of line 3 of high pressure of the same plant. "Due to the complexity of the necessary repair, it has had to be urgently sent to a specialized workshop in Gran Canaria where the damaged parts are being immediately replaced, and it is expected to be installed and operational next Tuesday, October 15," as explained by the Consortium. To make matters worse, these two circumstances were compounded by "a power outage at the same plant."
These "serious incidents" have caused the suspension of supply in a large part of the central and southern area of Lanzarote as a result of the significant decrease that has been recorded both in the production of the Janubio desalination plant and in the reserves of drinking water. According to the Consortium, the supply cut has been scheduled for 36 hours, with its restoration expected from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12.
