The surfing community of the Canary Islands is in mourning for the passing of José Luis García Uranga “Makumba”, who has died after battling a serious illness for several years.

Makumba, as he was known in the surfing world, was one of the most popular surfers, loved by all "for his kind personality and innate goodness, which made giving to others the banner of his life," as highlighted by the surfing community.

Makumba, in his surfing days

Originally from Algorta (Vizcaya), Makumba settled on the island in the 80s. In Lanzarote, a land he loved with passion, he dedicated himself to businesses related to surfing, from which he promoted this sport, promoting young local talents and others from the archipelago.

In the early 90s, he presented the radio program Onda Surf on Radio Lanzarote.

A great man with a heart of gold has left us, who will be remembered by all. RIP in the waves of heaven. We will never forget you
