Parallel to the constant population growth, Lanzarote has registered an increase in the number of unemployed of 29.31% in the last five years, according to data handled by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac). In January 2000, a total of 2,638 unemployed were registered in the island's employment offices. However, in December 2004, 3,732 unemployed were registered.
In this five-year period, there has been a slight reduction in the percentage of female unemployment compared to male unemployment, despite the fact that in the global figures, 428 new women and 422 men entered the Inem lists.
By labor sectors, there was a considerable increase in unemployment in construction, which was around 50%, going from 273 unemployed in 2000 to 536 at the end of last year. On the negative side, the service sector follows with an increase of 30% and the group of applicants without previous employment with an increase of 1.6%. However, in these five years agricultural unemployment has decreased by 34%, due to the abandonment of the sector, and construction unemployment by 49%, due to the end of the urban explosion.
By municipalities, Arrecife went from counting 1,301 unemployed to 1,928, which represents an increase of 33% in the period studied. Yaiza registered an increase of 53%, although it continues to maintain a very low unemployment rate, with only 190 registered. In the municipality of Haría, the figures showed an increase of 32% (from 157 to 107). In Tías the increase was 29.5% (from 270 to 383) and in Tinajo 30% (from 133 to 190). The number of applicants in Teguise increased by 27.5% (from 307 to 424). Finally, unemployment grew by only 6.3% in San Bartolomé.
