The Insular Hospital of Lanzarote, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has received accreditation from the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare as a Multiprofessional Teaching Unit of Geriatrics. This is the first Unit of these characteristics in the hospital network of the Canarian Health Service.

The accreditation of the Geriatrics service is the culmination of an important work carried out by the professionals of the center. The director of the same, Domingo Guzmán, considers that it is "a great step in the training of professionals: geriatric doctors and nurses, which will improve the care of the elderly population in the public health system."

The Insular Hospital of Lanzarote is the only center in the Canary Islands dedicated exclusively to Geriatrics that has a teaching unit, until now it trained 4 residents of Geriatrics; while from now on the number of places for specialization is increased by two and two places for geriatric nursing are added, a specialization that until now was not offered in the islands.

Considered as a reference in the care of the elderly, the Insular Hospital has all the units necessary for quality geriatric care: acute unit, outpatient consultations, medium-stay unit, residence, home care, its own rehabilitation service in a Day hospital with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and psychologist.

The manager of the Lanzarote Health Services, José Luis Aparicio, is pleased with the accreditation obtained from the Ministry and "congratulates the almost 200 professionals who make up the center's staff." In a year marked by the health crisis caused by Covid-19, Aparicio underlines the effort made by all of them to offer the best care to a particularly vulnerable group such as the elderly.
