It was 5:45 p.m. on Monday when a ship heading to dock in Puerto Naos came across a corpse of a 31-year-old Asian person floating in the sea. "The registered position is exactly in the middle of the entrance to the port, we had returned from sailing and the captain perceived something floating in the water," the first officer of the Gran Mersell sailboat, Przemysław Siekierski (known in Spain as Jakob), told La Voz.
Przemysław Siekierski explained that they perceived something floating in the middle of the sea, so they decided to "go around it" to find out exactly what it was, and that's when they "saw their shoes." At that moment, he recalled that "when seeing their lap we knew for sure that it was exactly a body."
The first officer of the sailboat contacted a marina employee through channel nine of the ship's radio, and that worker in turn contacted the Police. At the same time, another crew member contacted Emergencies through 1-1-2.
"All of this was until sunset," Przemysław Siekierski said. He and the rest of the crew had to wait at the scene until the Emergency services arrived. "It was already dark when they arrived," he reported.
While waiting for the arrival of the Guardamar Calíope, which was in charge of transferring the body to the dock after the request of the Civil Guard, it was getting dark and the corpse "began to drift towards the shore." Until then, they illuminated it with a lamp from the ship.
Przemysław Siekierski explained that the body was rescued by two operators in an auxiliary boat of the Guardamar. After that, it was transported to the search and rescue (SAR) services post on the dock. An agent took the data of the sailboat and the crew, and the boat headed to its post in Puerto Naos.
After that, two Port Police officers completed the data. It is the first time that the crew of the Gran Mersell have encountered a corpse at sea. "This is an unusual case, it is a unique situation," he concluded.
