Wednesday, October 31, is the closing date for the XIX edition of the Esperanza Spínola Poetry Prize, organized by the Teguise City Council. To date, 12 works have been submitted that will compete for a single, indivisible prize of 1,200 euros. In addition, the selected work will be disseminated, as the Culture Department of the City Council is committed to publishing it. The jury's decision will be announced next month.
The last edition was awarded to the journalist and writer from Gran Canaria, Santiago Gil García, with his work "The Color of Time", of which the jury highlighted the contemporary character he used in the compositions, without suffering from the rhythm of this genre.
All residents of the Canary Islands can participate in this contest. For their part, the works must be original and unpublished, and must not have participated in other awards. Likewise, they cannot have an extension less than 300 verses, nor more than 500. Those who are waiting until the last minute to submit their works should send them to the Culture Department of the Teguise City Council, located at Calle José Betancort, number 6 (Herrera Palace, in the Villa de Teguise).
14,000 euros for literary calls
This is one of the literary events organized by the Culture Department of the Teguise City Council, which, according to what has been made public, allocates an average of 14,000 euros to the public call for literary and creative contests during the year, in order to "keep genres such as poetry alive, through the Esperanza Espínola Prize, prose, with its Leandro Perdomo Prize, the epistolary genre, with the annual edition of the Love and Heartbreak Letters Contest "Novios del Mojón", or the popular compositions of couplets, with the regular call for the "Guanapay Couplets Contest".
For the councilor of the area, Noelia Umpiérrez, any investment in this type of call represents a contribution to culture that transcends the local scene.
