The dust episode that is hitting Lanzarote and La Graciosa is leaving an "unfavorable" air quality, which can affect health, both for healthy people and for people with respiratory conditions.
In this regard, in areas such as Arrecife, microparticles with a diameter of less than ten micrometers that affect air quality are "unfavorable". This represents a serious situation for those people who suffer from previous pathologies and can affect those with respiratory problems, such as asthma or allergies, more.
According to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency, it will not be until Wednesday when the air quality begins to improve.
Lanzarote and La Graciosa are under a yellow alert for dust from 10:00 AM this Monday and it will extend until 12:00 PM this Tuesday.
Recommendations for the population
From the Directorate General of Public Health, a special call is made to exercise extreme caution and follow recommendations to avoid health complications. Exposure to this pollutant can cause chest discomfort, cough, palpitations, fatigue, or increased susceptibility to respiratory infections, at least during the five days following the start of the episode.
Therefore, people sensitive to this type of episodes - such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases - are recommended the following measures:
-Do not go out into the street and keep the doors and windows of houses closed.
-Clean the surfaces with dust with damp cloths.
-Stay in humid environments and hydrate.
-Do not exercise outdoors.
-In case of worsening respiratory symptoms, call 1-1-2.
