Lanzarote registered during the first half of 2026 a decrease in crime of 3.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. This was reported by the Insular Directorate of the General State Administration with the commanders of the National Police and the Civil Guard in Lanzarote. However, an increase of 68.6% in crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity is registered.
The meeting allowed for an analysis of the evolution of the main security indicators and for the sharing of actions being carried out by both bodies to continue advancing in prevention, police response, and clarification of criminal acts.
Within this evolution, conventional crime decreased by 2.6%, while cybercrimes experienced a reduction of 14.1% during the analyzed period. By municipalities, conventional crime was reduced by more than 10% in Tías, 0.3% in Teguise, and increased by 6.5% in Arrecife.
Regarding crimes of a sexual nature, so far this year, 59 crimes against sexual indemnity and freedom have been registered, twelve of which were cases of rape (a 33.3% increase).
Another highlighted indicator is the crime rate, which stands at 44 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, below the national and Canary Islands average.
Likewise, the clearance rate reaches 60%, meaning that six out of every ten crimes are cleared. This indicator is above the national and Canary Islands averages, according to the Insular Directorate.

More personnel to reinforce security
These figures also emerge in a context of an increase in State Security Forces and Corps personnel stationed in Lanzarote.
Currently, the island has approximately 13% more personnel than in 2017, which allows for greater human resources to carry out functions of prevention, investigation, and response to crime.
The Insular Director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera, stated that "these figures reflect the daily work of the men and women of the National Police and the Civil Guard, as well as the importance of maintaining permanent coordination to analyze the evolution of security on the island".
Viera highlighted that “security requires constant work, prevention, investigation and response, and also collaboration between the different administrations and the citizens themselves”.
In this regard, he stressed the importance of citizen collaboration, both to prevent certain situations and to provide information that can contribute to the clarification of criminal acts.
“The data are a reference point for continuing to work. Our objective is to continue improving prevention and response to any form of crime and to guarantee the security of both those who live in Lanzarote and those who visit us,” he added.
The Insular Directorate will continue working together with the National Police and the Civil Guard in monitoring crime indicators, planning security needs, and coordinating actions carried out on the island.
