The Covid outbreak at the Insular Hospital was caused by a person who visited a patient

Domingo Guzmán, director of the center, affirms that the situation “is under control”. One of the patients remains in the center in isolation and the other has been transferred to Molina Orosa

The Covid outbreak detected at the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote originated “from a visit to a patient”, which has also led to “the person with whom she shares a room being infected.” This has been explained by the director of the center, Domingo Guzmán, who affirms that a screening has already been carried out on the rest of the users and workers and they have tested negative, so the situation "is under control".

Guzmán emphasizes that the two people infected within the Hospital “were already vaccinated”, so the symptomatology of the virus has been “mild”. One of them has been referred to Molina Orosa and the other continues at the Insular Hospital. “The person who remains here already had very important health problems, with an advanced disease, and is complying with the isolation protocols,” specifies the director. Furthermore, "coinciding" with this situation there was another patient who tested positive, but Guzmán affirms that it was “remnants of the disease” and did not cause any further contagion.

“Older people are more susceptible, their defenses are very damaged and they can acquire Covid like anyone else” recalls the director, although thanks to the vaccine “the symptoms have been mild in both affected people.”

Regarding visits to the Insular Hospital, which is what caused the outbreak, Domingo Guzmán assures that “the visit system is quite controlled”. “The control at the entrance is exhaustive, with a survey and a signature of the responsible declaration, temperature taking, hand hygiene and mask change if necessary,” adds Guzmán, who also recognizes that sometimes it happens that “someone who you can apparently think does not have any symptoms, is sick”. “We also don't know why it happened, since we don't monitor the cameras during visits, but somehow it has been transmitted. We have made visits more flexible but with a lot of control”, he adds.

The third dose of the vaccine has been inoculated to the residents

“It must be remembered that the vaccine protects us from serious illness and the risk of dying from Covid, but it does not protect 100% from mild symptoms”, recalls the director, who maintains that on occasions, “not intentionally, we can transmit the virus to other people, because you can be in an incubation period, and if there are no symptoms or they are mild and not given importance, it is contagious.”

Domingo Guzmán has also taken advantage of the microphones of Radio Lanzarote to announce that the 47 residents of the Insular Hospital “have already received the third dose of the vaccine”, thus complying with what was established by the Ministry of Health.

“Families who have someone in the Insular Hospital can rest assured, the outbreak is under control”, Guzmán concludes.
