The Cabildo of Lanzarote celebrated this Saturday, October 15, a commemorative event for the International Day of Rural Women. The ceremony took place at the Farmer's Monument, where the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, accompanied by the mayors, presented a distinction to six outstanding women as a tribute to their career and historical contribution to the Island.
The women distinguished by the Island Institution on this day were Teodomira Socas Perdomo, from Haría; Esperanza Machín Tejera, from San Bartolomé; Lourdes Clavijo Abreut, from Teguise; Isabel Delgado Betancor, from Tías; Josefina Martín, from Tinajo, and Vicenta Bravo Marrero, from Yaiza.
Dolores Corujo welcomed those present and conveyed her congratulations to all rural women on their day. “A large part of what we have built to the present day in Lanzarote is owed to the people of the countryside and, especially, to the women who were pioneers in these jobs and who played a vital role in the growth of the Island.”
“That is why we are giving this recognition to six women from six different municipalities for their historical work in an area traditionally associated with men and for the sacrifice made over the years so that Lanzarote is the modern, rich and sustainable island that we know today,” added the president.
For his part, the Councilor for the Primary Sector, Andrés Stinga, who was unable to attend the event, spoke through an audiovisual reproduction congratulating the women distinguished during the ceremony and pointing out that “these are an example for the new generations, demonstrating the importance of continuing to promote the rural environment for the economy and development of Lanzarote”
“We need women like these to continue spreading the traditions of the countryside. We have great natural riches that we must take advantage of and the female collective must be the protagonist,” he concluded.
