On the occasion of World Cancer Day, which is commemorated every February 4, the Cabildo of Lanzarote hosted this Friday the reading of a manifesto in front of its facade. In addition, the Farmer's Monument will be illuminated on Saturday night in green in support of all people suffering from this disease.
The event was presided over by the Councilor for Social Rights of the island corporation, Isabel Martín, and was attended by the institution's councilors, Myriam Barros and Andrés Stinga. In addition, representatives of the Spanish Association Against Cancer on the island, and the Councilor for Social Welfare of the Arrecife City Council, María Jesús Tovar, joined the event.
The Councilor for Social Rights of the Cabildo de Lanzarote stressed the need to "raise awareness and mobilize the entire society about the importance of adding resources and capabilities around a large program of action against cancer."
"It is very important to do it and do it now, because the data speak for themselves," said Isabel Martín, recalling that "in Spain 32 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every hour, being the second cause of death in our country, and that the survival rate is 50 percent, being lower in some types of cancer."
Therefore, during the reading of the manifesto carried out this Friday, the population of Lanzarote has been invited to join efforts to promote the project 'All Against Cancer', an initiative led by the Spanish Association Against Cancer that seeks to involve the entire Spanish society in the fight against this disease and achieve a 70% increase in the cancer survival rate by 2030.
