The gradual tourist and economic reactivation is causing the Teguise Village Market to receive a greater influx of visitors every Sunday, reaching more than 8,000 people last August 8 who, during its celebration, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., accessed La Mareta square, the only area enabled so far for the event with 130 stalls.
Due to this situation, and the demand of the merchants, the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, has supervised the elaboration of a new plan in coordination with Emergencies and Civil Protection of Lanzarote, which will be governed by the current regulatory framework in the protection against Covid-19, but will also include novelties in its development and in the set of measures, protocols and obligations of merchants, customers and staff of the Market.
The mayor has assured in the Security Board that "Teguise seeks to adapt as soon as possible and with all the guarantees to the imminent recovery of the tourist market this summer and thus favor economic growth, commercial revitalization and employment in the municipality,"
"For this reason, we continue working in coordination with all the agents involved so that the Market continues to grow until it recovers its initial approach and accommodates all the vendors in the Historic Center of the Village," added Betancort, who assures that "this new design has a mobility, traffic and transport plan, as well as exquisite security, both in access and capacity control with visualization cameras, as in emergency exits, and presence of guards and competent police."
From Sunday, August 22, new areas will be opened; an interior one in the Municipal Tent with capacity for 34 new stalls for handicrafts and agriculture, and two exterior ones in the Garajonay parking lot, next to the Teguise mill. Likewise, the assembly of food caravans will be allowed in the La Mareta area. In total, the assembly of 270 stalls will be allowed.
According to the forecasts indicated in this new Security Plan, a maximum influx of 1,880 people is estimated in the moments of maximum concentration foreseen for the development of the activity between the 4 enabled zones, where there are bathroom services for users, as well as terraces for food and beverage caravans.
Despite the changes, the established measures to avoid contagion will continue: distance of at least 2 meters between the chairs of adjoining tables, between groups of tables and between groups of customers at the bar; the arrangement of the chairs in zigzag will be sought to prevent diners from being face to face; the space assigned at the bar to each customer or group of customers must be physically marked in a visible way; prohibition of smoking on terraces, etc., being able to be expelled from the event and sanctioned by the police if these measures contained in the Royal Decree Law of urgent measures of prevention, containment and coordination to deal with the health crisis caused by Covid19 are not taken.
Security plans ready for the agricultural, handicraft and traditional markets
Eugenio Robayna, head of the area, has assured that "the new plan will be in force as long as the activity can be developed as planned by the technicians and according to the Covid alert level of the island, with the aim of being able to present a wide variety of options for use, both commercial and cultural, that can collaborate and help the reactivation of the local economy, both in the Village and in Costa Teguise."
In addition, the councilman confirms that "the respective security plans for the agricultural market (Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), handicraft market (Wednesdays, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and traditional market (Fridays, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.) are also ready, all of them in the Pueblo Marinero of Costa Teguise, with a total of 23 stalls each, and whose application call for those interested is already published on the website teguise.es".
"Once the technicians conclude the process of awarding the stalls, the three small markets of the emblematic square of the town of Costa Teguise, which are an attraction for both tourists and residents, will be reopened to the public," added Robayna.
