The residents of the town of Soo are celebrating the festivities in honor of their patron saint San Juan Bautista. For this reason, the festival committee and the board of directors of the El Buen Lugar Socio-Cultural Center have prepared an extensive program of events very well distributed for the enjoyment of children, young people and adults.
Last Thursday they carried out an emotional act of recognition to the men and women who worked in the canning factories of the island, a task not easy at all in which many were involved. The organizers formed a research table to be able to achieve the goal set: to locate all the people from Soo who had worked in the canneries. In total, they managed to count a total of 80.
The act began with the inauguration of the photographic exhibition, where you could see how those beginnings were in the industry derived from fishing, in which other images provided by the residents themselves were also exhibited. The neighbor Nori Machín was in charge of reciting some poems about this recognition, giving way to a representation of young people from the town dressed in peasant costumes who performed a simulation of how they carried out the work task.
Likewise, the act ended with a couplet sung by Sara Bermúdez. The piece was accompanied on the guitar by Adrián Niz, with airs of malagueña and lyrics by Miguel Ángel Bermúdez, who in great detail reflected part of the work carried out by those workers who, seeking a better welfare for the family, temporarily left their homes to settle near their workplaces in Arrecife. Meanwhile, the choreography of the malagueña was in charge of Nereida Hernández and Andoni Machín.
During the act, a video was shown where Reyes Martín, Angelina Betancort, Antonio Rivera and Teófilo Machín related their experiences during the years they worked in the canning factories. Immediately afterwards, Sara Bermúdez and Adrián Niz returned to put voice and music interpreting two themes with Canarian roots with Mazurca de Gáldar and Oración del Remanso. After that, they gave way to the neighbor Lola Curbelo who, on behalf of the honorees, thanked the attendees for their presence and the organization for such an emotional act, also remembering all those who have passed away. With the delivery of a gift for all, the act was concluded in which the mayor of the Teguise City Council, Olivia Duque, and councilors of the consistory were also present.
