The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared an alert situation due to rain throughout the Canary archipelago, although Aemet does not announce rain nor has it activated any warning for the specific case of Lanzarote.
This alert will come into effect at 03:00 on Tuesday, October 6. "Abundant cloudiness is expected in all the islands and probable precipitations in the form of showers that will cross the archipelago from south to north and that could be locally strong and/or of a stormy type", warns the Emergency Consortium
"The mass of clouds that is expected to visit the islands will be unstable and with humidity. Showers could be recorded at any point on the islands, so they are not ruled out in Lanzarote and the arrival or proximity of storms is not ruled out either", he adds, pointing out that "a little more heat will be noticed" and the wind will blow from the NE of variable intensity between 10 - 40 km/h.
From the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, they remind that, through the website http://www.emergenciaslanzarote.com/recomendaciones-por-fuertes-lluvias/, the residents of the island can report any incident in the face of the rains and fill out a brief form. In the same way, the recommendations to be followed by the population are also established:
- Check the condition of the roofs, drains, etc. If you live near a ravine, inform your City Council if it is saturated with waste, debris, etc.
- Before the imminent arrival of heavy rains, pay attention to the instructions given through the media.
- Never (even in summer), camp in floodable places, ravines, etc.
- If possible, stay in your home, bearing in mind that it is not located in ravines or in places of risk.
- Avoid driving during heavy rains, if it is essential, take extreme precautions, paying special attention to the height of the water, moderating the speed and watching the brakes. If the vehicle starts to fill with water, it is better to abandon it.
- Preferably drive on main roads or highways, avoiding forest tracks or secondary roads and using the shortest gears.
- In case of having to cross flooded areas where the water has current, tie a rope to your waist, fastened at the other end to some fixed or heavy object.
- Do not cross bridges that the water overflows over.
- If the problem surprises you at home, prevent toxic and/or flammable substances from coming into contact with water.
- Do not enter the floodable areas of the house, such as garages, basements, etc.
- Never use the elevator, the electrical fluid can fail at any time.
- Disconnect the electrical current.
- If the case arrives, do not hesitate to leave the house, heading to a higher place, or to where the authorities are referring the neighbors.
- If the water isolates you in the upper part of your house, do not abandon it swimming, the current can drag you, it is preferable to wait for help.
- Do not overestimate your possibilities, be prudent, and if necessary, wait for specialized help.
- Once the emergency is over, do not return to your home until the technicians indicate that it is safe to do so.
- Once you can access the homes, do not light matches or devices that give off any spark, including the light switch.
- Drink only bottled water.
In case of adverse weather phenomenon, if you need any type of information, use 012 and not 112, a number that should only be used in case of emergency.
