The Directorate General of Emergencies, based on the anticipated situation, and in application of the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) has declared a pre-alert in Lanzarote and the rest of the archipelago due to the partial solar eclipse that will take place next Wednesday, August 12, between 18:57 and 20:45 hours.
The reason for this declaration is the extraordinary increase in mobility and possible population concentrations in specific points of the islands open to the west.
Furthermore, the objective is to guarantee the safety of people who travel to observe the phenomenon, as well as to minimize the risk of forest fires associated with an eventual concentration of population in forest and interface areas, especially in the event of adverse weather conditions.
It is also intended to reinforce information exchange, permanent monitoring of the event, and coordination between the Government of the Canary Islands, the island councils, the town councils, the General Administration of the State, and the security, emergency, health, road, transport, and environmental services, avoiding possible impacts on health, lifeguard, transport, and telecommunications services.
In case of observing the eclipse, it is recommended to do so from nearby, accessible, and safe places, avoiding unnecessary travel to peaks and forest areas; use public transport when possible; do not park vehicles outside designated areas or on shoulders, roads, or emergency access routes; stagger your return; respect the restrictions established by the competent authorities and follow the indications of the authorities at all times.
For the observation of the phenomenon, only approved ocular protection devices should be used, and the instructions associated with them should be followed, avoiding in any case looking directly at the Sun or using cameras, binoculars, or telescopes without adequate solar filters.
