A resident of Playa Blanca has been praised by the Yaiza City Council as an "example of solidarity." Born in Badajoz, residing in Playa Blanca for nine years and a carpenter by profession, Luis Quintana knows what it is like to put on the volunteer suit when hands and encouragement are needed in the face of a natural disaster, he did so in 2021 on the island of La Palma devastated by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano and also traveled last April to Turkey, to Hatay, one of the provinces most affected by the earthquake, to help in logistical tasks in the face of this terrible humanitarian crisis.
The acting mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, publicly praises "the voluntary work in the midst of so much desolation, personified in this case by our neighbor Luis Quintana, who does not hesitate to make himself available to NGOs wherever they need him, with the sole interest of helping people and families who are victims of emergencies of such magnitude."
Luis Quintana was in warehouses in Hatay for fifteen days in the collection and distribution of food and basic necessities for the Turkish population, witnessing the horror of the emergency up close. "I am moved by the commitment to be able to help together with hundreds and hundreds of volunteer women and men from all over the world who add up to alleviate the pain in some way," says Quintana.
Fully integrated in Yaiza, Luis Quintana "is a neighbor who is an example of solidarity who also demonstrates interest in the traditions and customs of his municipality, thus, he restored the old boat that supports the sculpture of Cintia Machín, located in the center of Playa Blanca, with which the municipality pays tribute to the seafaring tradition of the town", the council has highlighted.
